56. BARLAB: Innovative and sustainable solutions for the management and treatment of one of the by-products of the brewing industry, diatomaceous earth.

Description

Tech Transfer Agrifood is working with Barlab Ventures looking for solutions to one of the by-products of the brewing industry, diatomaceous earth.

Diatomaceous earths come from single-celled algae called diatoms that are part of phytoplankton. Its uses have been very varied due to its high levels of silica that give it its common name of white lands. In addition to being a great natural fertilizer and insecticide, these lands are used in the beer filtering process.

The objective of the challenge is to maximize the value of this component after its use in the brewing process and introduce it back into the market with the greatest contribution of circularity and efficiency for new processes.

Possible Approaches

Solutions as a transport medium for macronutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium [NPK]). Alternatives aligned with the objectives of the European Green Pact, to the waste generated in the beer filtration sub-process with upstream application (cereal crops) within the value chain of the beer sector itself

Companies with innovations in the collection process and making this material available to customers.

Industrial solutions to optimize the drying and transformation process of diatoms.

Generation of new products based on diatoms.

Alternatives for the recovery of this by-product.
